Nomination for your Death Grant

Top

It is very important to nominate a beneficiary to receive the death grant. From 1 April 2008, your death grant is three tiimes  your actual pensionable pay.and would be paid to whomever you nominate on your nomination form. This is currently tax-free and we usually send a cheque within about 5-7 days of death.

If you have retired on or after 1 April 2008 and you die within 10 years, your beneficiary will recieve the balance of 10 years pension as a death grant if you die before age 75. Once you have been on pension for 10 years, a death grant would not be paid. If you leave on or after 1 April 2008 with deferred benefits and you die before the benefits are paid, the death grant is equal to 5 times the annual pension

If you have not nominated a beneficiary, the death grant would usually be paid to your Estate. Completing a nomination form speeds up the payment as it avoids probate.

However, in the absence of a nomination form, we will automatically make the payment to your legally married spouse or registered civil partner.

Each new form we recieve will supercede the previous if you decide to change your beneficiary.

You can find more information in our death benefits factsheet.
