Transfers In and Out
Transfers In
You may be able to transfer pension rights into the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) from:
- a previous LGPS fund, or
- a previous employer's pension scheme, or
- a self-employed pension plan, or
- a ‘buy-out’ policy, or
- a personal pension plan, or·a stakeholder pension scheme, or
- an Additional Voluntary Contribution (AVC) arrangement
including, in some cases, from an overseas pension scheme. Any previous occupational or personal pension can be classified into two types - club and non club.
If you re-join the LGPS, you can normally transfer your previous LGPS pension rights to your new membership, enabling you to enjoy benefits based upon your entire membership and linked to your final pay in your new job. If your new job is less well paid, you will need to decide whether it may be better not to join the benefits together.
The leaflet Changing jobs in the LGPS details all the things you need to consider when making this decision.
If you have paid into a non-LGPS pension arrangement, you may be able to transfer your previous pension rights into the LGPS. If you opt to transfer pension rights from a non-LGPS arrangement then a sum of money called a transfer value is offered to buy a membership credit in the LGPS.
Any transfer or benefits into Wiltshire Pension Fund must be made within 12 months of joining the scheme.
If you have recently joined the pension scheme, you should have either received a previous pension declaration form or a transfer booklet in your pension starter pack. To investigate a transfer you will need to complete the relevant form depending on which one of the above you received. If you did not receive a starter pack or you no longer have the form or booklet, we can send you transfer booklet with the required forms if you contact us
Transfers Out
It is possible to transfer your Local Government Pensions Scheme service to your new employer or provider. You will need to ask your new employer or pension provider if they will accept a transfer and they will request details from us.
